September 2007 Newsletter

Welcome to September.

The summer flew by once again for all of us and September is back, back to routines, back to activities and back to school….

Here are updates and up coming calendar events not to be missed.

Christmas Party 2007
Please keep the date of Sunday December 9th, 2007, open, for our Christmas Party, held this year at the Port Credit Legion Hall on Front St., Mississauga. Further details to follow....

Bread and Honey Race June 2007
The Bread and Honey Race 2007 was a huge success with record breaking participants, record breaking volunteers, record breaking running times, and record breaking profits.  This year’s race, raised $11,139.25 for the Caring Network:  $2,139.25 in Sponsorship funds and $9,000.00 in race profits.  Congratulations to everyone who participated!  These funds are instrumental to cover our operating expenses and to ensure the continued success of the Caring Network for Challenged Kids.  Thanks again everyone, and hopefully we’ll see you again next year!

Summer Picnic July 2007

Once again the sun was shinning on  Sunrise Acres in Milton where many families gathered at our annual summer picnic. We want to welcome some new families that have joined the Caring Network and have already begun to make new connections and new friends. Do not hesitate to contact one of us if in need of any information.

No picnic would be complete without the laughs and games of  the clown, the bouncy castle, the horse and cart rides and of course, lots of food! Thank you everyone for your yummy dessert contribution and our regular hard working executive that pull it all together.

DSAO Conference

As usual The Down syndrome Association of Ontario has planned the annual fall conference on October 19-21, 2007 in Peterborough. See the website www.dsao.ca for further details and instructions to register. Some members of the Caring Network have attended in the past and have found this conference worth the couple of days away from home filled with information from great speakers and friendly networking.

Caring Network and DSAO

In the past year the Caring Network has joined the larger umbrella of DSAO. We have found this affiliation beneficial to our group. I attend 4 meetings a year and meet the executives of other groups such as Halton, Toronto, Niagara, London etc… Together we discover information such as education bylaws etc… to further inform you of changes and possibilities for our unique families.

Bowling Family Fun Night

Because of this new affiliation, one event this year the Caring Network will participate in this one-time Masters Bowl-a-thon Fundraising. The Masters Bowlers of Ontario have approached DSAO to be the recipients of their annual charity Bowl off and in turn DSAO has invited all other groups, such as ours, to be part of this event and benefit from the fundraising. As most of you know, we always have a fun family bowling event during Down syndrome Awareness week and this evening will not change.  You DO NOT need pledges to attend, come as usually do.  This year our bowling event date is Thursday November 1st at our usual venue of Streetsville Bowl.  Please read carefully the following letters which explains the Fundraising part of this event, if you wish to help us fundraise. Our event will be its usual fun family night with extras.  We are creating awareness too and we have a ball!!!! Mark your calendars and see you there.

You may RSVP with numbers of family members please, to Francesca at bellfrancesca@sympatico.ca

I am also extending an invitation to any business that may want to sponsor a lane as a contribution to the fundraising or donate a gift or certificates for the raffle. Please contact Lisa for further information at drummondl@hdsb.ca or call at 905-896-3890.
